TARNTARAN : Five days after Hindustan Times highlighted the plight of the Centre Government Elementary School here, where students have to sit in the in the open in the chilly weather, due to lack of classrooms, Tarn Taran MLA Dr Dharamvir Agnihotri visited the school on Saturday and promised to repair the school building soon.

“I was astonished after knowing that students of the school are studding in the open and in open corridors because of the dilapidated condition of the building,” said the MLA.

He said, “I have asked the block elementary education officer (BEEO) to vacate the two rooms, occupied by his staff, immediately for students. “I will also raise the issue of constructing new classrooms in the school with the authorities concerned,” he added.

During his visit to the school, the MLA noticed that students were studying in the open and sitting on the ground. He said, “I have also requested deputy commissioner (DC) Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal for arranging benches for the students.”

Principal Gurmeet Singh had earlier said, “The three rooms available for the students are extremely unsafe. I had also asked the department of public works (PWD) to declare the rooms unsafe officially. The building was constructed in 1939.”The situation becomes terrible during the rainy season as there is no proper system to drain out rainwater from school premises. There are 173 students from Class 1 to 5 in the school.
