6,800 police personnel to keep vigil in Amritsar, Jalandhar

AMRITSAR/JALANDHAR With the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Paty (SAD-BJP) alliance raising apprehensi­ons of excesses by Congress workers on the day of polling, police have deployed 6,800 personnel in Amritsar and Jalandhar.

In Amritsar, 4,000 police personnel will be deployed and the administra­tion has set up 748 polling booths at 365 polling stations. As many as 118 polling stations have been declared hypersensi­tive, 155 sensitive and 92 non-sensitive. A total of 2,100 police personnel have been deployed at the poling stations, said police commission­er SS Srivastava.

Srivastava said 35 patrolling parties have been constitute­d for surveillan­ce of every nook and corner of the city to prevent any untoward situation. Reserve parties have also been deployed with station house officers and police post in-charges to ensure peaceful and fair elections, he said.

Srivastava said nakas have been put up in the city and surroundin­g areas to check vehicles and suspicious people.

“Strict action would be taken against those found in interferin­g in the poll process. The polling day has been declared as dry day and nobody will be allowed to carry explosive substances, sharp-edged weapons and arms,” he said.

In Jalandhar, the city police have deployed 2,800 cops with multi-tier security arrangemen­ts. Police commission­er Praveen Kumar Sinha said 1,700 police personnel have been deployed posted at 265 polling stations which have 554 polling booths.

“Twenty reserve police parties comprising 205 personnel have been constitute­d. The 12 police stations of the city have been assigned to as many ACPs,” Sinha said. Once counting will be over additional police force will be deployed.
