DON’T LET YOUR PAST KEEP YOU FROM PROGRESSING TO A BRIGHT FUTURE

- Harish Barthwal Innervoice@hindustantimes.com

While reading letters posted to Mahatma Gandhi, one day, one of his close aides, discovered a few of writings that were quite offensive. However, as per instructions, he had to submit all of them to Gandhiji.

Later, he asked Bapu whether he had seen the slanderous letters. To this, Bapu replied, “Yes I did. I retained what was worthwhile.”

The Mahatma further explained that a progressive person does not ruin his present by the irrelevant or negative remarks hurled on him. He understands that harping on unwanted remembrances of the past dissuades one from the future course of action.

Not everybody will treat you fairly and one can surge forward only by letting go of unsavoury encounters, moments and actions. Clinging on to the same chapter of a book prevents one from proceeding to the next.

Letting go is hard, but worth learning. Moreover, defeat or failure is never final. Brooding over the wrongs committed against you can cause perennial agony. Psychologists tell us that whatever be the magnitude of one’s loss, it can last only for some days. Author Susan Gale says :“The only way to get over the past is to leave it behind. If you spend your time reliving moments that are gone forever, you might miss the special moments that are yet to come.” (Inner Voice comprises contributions from our readers.)
