IN INTERACTION WITH DGP, FEMALE COPS SAY THEY SHOULD ALSO BE GIVEN CHARGE AS STATION HOUSE OFFICERS MORE OFTEN

PATIALA:Women personnel in the Punjab Police on Thursday took up issues pertaining to promotions and seniority with director general of police (DGP) Suresh Arora who directed senior officials to set up a committee to look into the matter.

The committee will be headed by inspector general (headquarters) Jatinder Singh Aulakh. Arora, who was at Harpal Tiwana Centre for Performing Arts in Patiala, took stock of problems faced by the women police personnel.

Punjab IG (provisioning) Gurpreet Kaur Deo and Upneet Lalli, deputy director, Institute of Correctional Administration, were also present on the occasion.

Several sub-inspectors (SIs) and ASIs took up the matter of representation of women at police stations. They said women officers should also be given charge of station house officers (SHOs) at police stations more often.

Arora said more women police officers will be hired and their quota will also be increased in the police force as per the recommendations of the National Commission for Women.

The DGP also assured that steps will be taken to resolve the issues related to postings of couples.

As there were complaints by women police personnel that they feel uncomfortable with regard to the language used in police stations by their male colleagues, the DGP said with an increase in the number of women personnel, work culture in the department will change.

“I have asked senior officials to send instructions to all the police stations that male personnel should maintain discipline and decorum,’’ he said.

‘DO STINGS, LAY TRAPS IN CORRUPTION CASES’

The DGP said officials have been told to carry out sting operations, lay traps in complaints of graft and no one will stop them.

“Secondly, we need to maintain supervision within the organisation as we have an internal vigilance cell which receives such complaints. Transparency is key to deal with such cases,” he said.
