GURDASPUR: Accusing his in-laws of mentally harassing him, a 27-year-old man hanged himself at his house in a Gurdaspur village and live-streamed the suicide on Facebook on Wednesday.

In the video, Paramjit Singh, who worked as a crane operator in Karnataka, is seen accusing his in-laws of harassing him and his family as they wanted him to live with them. They would not let him speak to his wife, Baljit Kaur, claiming she was unwell, he alleged. Bhaini Mian Khan station house officer (SHO) Sarbjit Singh said Paramjit had come to his native Nanowal Jindarh village a fortnight ago before the birth of his first child.

“Paramjit was being mentally harassed by his in-laws. They wanted him to sell off his share in his parental property at Nanowal Jindarh and settle with them at Daburji village in Amritsar district,” the SHO said.

Paramjit came back to his home on Wednesday after meeting his wife at his in-laws’ house, where she lives with their sixday-old baby boy. The SHO said Paramjit was happy with the birth of his son on January 5 and even distributed sweets to his relatives and friends in the village on Wednesday. Paramjit’s cousin JP Singh, who lives in Bahrain, saw the Facebook video and immediately called Paramjit’s father. When no one answered, JP called his father, Ranjit Singh, to tell him about the suicide. By the time Ranjit was able to contact Paramjit’s father, he was already dead. Gurdaspur SSP HS Bhullar said a case under Sections 306 and 34 of the IPC was registered against Paramjit’s wife Baljit, her parents Upkar Singh and Sarbjit Kaur at Bhaini Mian Khan police station.
