GURGAON: Violence broke out in Bhondsi jail on Wednesday morning when members of two gangs clashed over a minor issue while buying food items from the jail canteen. The incident took place around 8.45am.

A complaint in this regard was lodged by jail officials against the accused, and case has been registered against them.

Six persons, including three inmates and three wardens, were injured in the clash. Inmates broke sticks from trees inside the jail and started hitting each other, stated the complaint filed by jail officials with the police.

“The two groups got into a fight while an elderly inmate was buying some food articles from the canteen. One group came and ordered that they be served first, whereas members of the other gang said that the elderly man be served first. This led to the fight. Later, these inmates called their supporters within the jail and started assaulting each other. The incident took place in phase 1 and the prison staff rushed to take control of the situation,” Jai Kishan Chillar, jail superintendent, Bhondsi prison, said.

The clash between 12 to 15 inmates who belong to two groups—the Bindar Gujjar gang, and the Rajesh Bawana and Ashok Gujjar gang—was so ferocious that the jail officials had to sound the jail siren to alert all security personnel inside the jail who intervened to bring the situation under control, police said.

A large police team also reached phase 1 of the jail, where the canteen is and brought the situation under control.

After the incident, a team from the Gurgaon police officials reached the jail and carried out a thorough search of the premises along with the jail staffers. They seized 22 mobile phones that were abandoned by inmates. A case will also be registered in connection with the recovery of phones.

Three jail wardens who were taken to a hospital for treatment include Surender, Somnath and Jaibhagwan.
