YAMUNANAGAR : : A 27-year-old woman from Jharkhand forced to work as a maid without salary for the last 16 months was rescued from a house in Yamunanagar’s Sector 17 locality.

A team of women and child welfare department that rescued the woman got a tip-off that Pupal Marandi was allegedly brought to the house of Harwinder Oberoi about 16 months ago and worked without any salary.

The matter came to light after Paramjit Singh Badola, a member of the Haryana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights got information about it. “We conducted a raid in the house and found the woman. Then we informed the women protection officer about this. I fail to understand as why the police did not file a complaint against the house owner as it is a case of human trafficking and bonded labour,” Badola said.

While the house owner is learnt to have deposited ₹1.20 lakh in the woman’s account as her 16-month salary, HUDA police post incharge Bhupinder Singh said they did not receive any complaint in this case.

District protection officer Arwinderjeet Kaur said, “We have recorded the woman’s statement but she refused to file a police complaint against the house owner. She says she took up the issue as she wants to return home.” “She called women helpline twice in the past few days but when the police met her she refused to lodge a complaint,” Kaur said.
