PANIPAT: Police have booked a 26-year-old youth in connection with the murder of a 30-year-old woman after her half-burnt body was found near the Parshavnath locality in Panipat on late Friday evening.

The accused Arif Khan is allegedly the paramour of the victim, identified as Najma, 30.

The victim’s family members told the police that Najma had married Israr Ahmad of Holi Mohalla nine years ago and the couple had two children. “Two years ago, Najma got into a relationship with Arif, which strained her relations with her husband. About a year and a half ago, she separated from her husband and was hoping to marry Arif,” the family members claimed.

“But Arif did not want to marry her and so he killed her,” Najma’s brother alleged.

The family further alleged that on Friday night, Arif had called her to his residence at Parshavnath locality on Faridpur Road. Later, she was found dead near the flats. Her brother said that the accused had torched the body with fuel in a bid to hide her identity.

Panipat city police station in-charge Amit Kumar said that based on the family’s complaint, a case was registered against Arif under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

He said that police was waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the actual cause of death.

Kumar also said that the police was investigating the case from different angles and the possibility of suicide has not been ruled out.
