Harsh words break no bones, but they do break hearts. We should be careful of what we say, as we can say something hurtful in 10 seconds, but wounds of those 10 seconds last forever for the person who heard them.

A learned person once said, “Be sure to taste your words before you spit them out.” What one has already said can only be forgiven, not forgotten. In today’s age of stress and frustration, we often use harsh words, mostly against our close friends and family. We may regret it later, but it tarnishes a good relationship.

Yes, one can always apologise, but the words can’t be taken back. That’s why they say, precaution is better than cure, so we should always try to be calm and composed. Silence and calmness are more powerful than harsh words and better for both the persons involved. This calm attitude is only possible when we take care and be aware of what we are feeling because it’s when we’re feeling bad that we tend to speak harshly.

It’s important to accept that in life, there will be ups and downs. So, we need to create awareness within us about how and when we feel negative. Focus on what you can do to get rid of negative feelings. It may vary for different people —take a deep breath, talk to a friend, listen to your favourite music, remember a loving memory or laugh out loud — but doing that will save you from hurting someone with your harsh words.
