TWO ITI STUDENTS DIE IN HOSHIARPUR MISHAP

HOSHIARPUR: Two students were killed, while several other passengers, mostly students, sustained serious injuries after a speeding mini-bus overturned at a village in Hoshiarpur’s Talwara town on Friday morning.

The deceased were identified as Munish Kumar, 19, and Saurav, 18, both residents of Rajwal village and students at Industrial Training Institute, Talwara.

Another passenger, Sunil Kumar, was referred to PostGradua­te Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, with critical injuries. Two girls, who sustained fractures, were admitted to a hospital in Dasuya, while other passengers, who sustained minor injuries are undergoing treatment at the local civil hospital.

Police said the mini-bus of Khalsa Transport company was on its way to Talwara. As it reached Rajwal village, its driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiatin­g a sharp turn, causing the mini-bus to overturn.

“The driver, Saminder Singh, and the unidentifi­ed conductor fled the spot, leaving the mini-bus behind. The vehicle has been impounded,” said Surinder Kumar, station house officer (SHO), Talwara.

A case under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A ( causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the mini-bus driver at the Talwara police station.
