AGARTALA: On the last day of the campaign in Tripura before the election on Sunday, Congress president Rahul Gandhi accused the Left front government of not fulfilling its promises.

“The Congress can provide good governance and I appeal to the people to opt for the Congress as an alternative to the CPI(M). We fulfill all promises,” Gandhi said at a rally in Kailasahar, Unakoti district, on Friday, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a similar appeal to voters in the northeastern state.

The Congress, in its manifesto, promised to provide employment, waive off farmers’ loans and ensure welfare of journalists.

Modi had addressed four rallies during his two visits to the state in which he accused the Manik Sarkar government of corruption and bad governance.

Branding the Congress and the CPI(M) as ‘two sides of the same coin’, the PM had claimed that both the parties had a secret understanding and the Congress was contesting the assembly polls to help the CPI(M).

SHAH PROMISES ‘A MODEL MEGHALAYA’

SHILLONG: BJP president Amit Shah has promised that Meghalaya will be a model state in the next five years if the saffron party is voted to power in the upcoming assembly polls.

Addressing his audience at an election rally in the city on Friday, Shah accused Congress leaders of pocketing public funds meant for development.

Shah claimed that the Northeast was turning towards the party in ways never seen before after Prime Minister Narendra Modi started prioritising development work in the region. “With these efforts, the acceptance of the BJP in the Northeast is increasing and we have a government in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. The BJP will form governments in Nagaland and Tripura too,” he said. HTC
