Process to elect CKD’s three top office-bearers begins

ELECTIONS TO THE POSTS OF PRESIDENT, VICEPRESID­ENT AND SECREATARY WILL BE HELD ON MARCH 25

AMRITSAR : The Chief Khalsa Diwan (CKD) has started the process of filling three top posts of president, vice-president and the secretary.

The elections to fill these posts will be held on March 25 under the supervisio­n of three returning officers including former vice-chancellor Dr Surinderpa­l Singh of Guru Nanak Dev University, Iqbal Singh Lalpura and principal (retd) Baljinder Singh. The returning officers held a meeting her on Saturday and issued a notificati­on in this regard.

The post of the president had fallen vacant after the incumbent president Charanjit Singh Chadha was expelled from the primary membership of the 115year old organisati­on following a row over a sleaze video showing him in an objectiona­ble position with a woman principal of one of its schools. After he was expelled, Dhanraj Singh was appointed as officiatin­g president.

The post of vice-president of the CKD fell vacant after incumbent Inderpreet Singh Chadha, elder son of Charanjit Singh Chadha, committed suicide with his own licensed pistol on January 3, following the video row about his father. The post of secretary is already lying vacant.

While issuing the notificati­on, principal (retd) Baljinder Singh, one of the ROs, said, “We will act as an independen­t body just like the Election Commission of India. So, we have opened a separate election office to conduct free and fair polls. CKD staff will assist me in the the conduct of the elections,” said Baljinder Singh.

Narinder Singh Khurana, honorary secretary, said the process of filing nomination­s started from 3 pm on March 3 and the last date for same is March 13. He said papers will be scrutinise­d on March 14.

Candidate may withdraw their papers by March 16. The election will be held during the general House meeting through secret ballot paper.

Baljinder Singh said that the five-year term of the general House is expiring in February 2019. So, the tenure of the newly elected office-bearers will also expire with the tenure of the general House.
