Teachers, other employees protest at PSEB office

MOHALI: A large number of teachers and other employees on Tuesday held a demonstrat­ion outside the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) complex to urge the state government to fulfil the promises made to them on the eve of the assembly elections last year.

Among them were computer teachers, Sarb Sikhsha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers, model and adarsh school employees, SSA ministeria­l staff, mid-day meal scheme employees.

They said there were reports that the government would force them to work on the basic pay A decision in this regard is expected to be taken in the cabinet meeting scheduled to be held on Wednesday.

Ankit Bansal, OSD to chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh, received a memorandum of demands from them. He assured them a meeting with chief principal secretary Suresh Kumar.

MOVE TO SLASH SALARIES OPPOSED

Meanwhile, Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisati­ons (PFUCTO) general secretary Jagwant Singh said the proposal of the Punjab government to reduce the salary of on-contract school teachers to onefourth of their present pay so as to induct them as regular employees is a cruel joke upon them.

The PFUCTO, a body that includes teachers of GNDUTA, PCCTU, PUTA, GCTA, PAUTA and GADVASU, said that nearly 15,000 teachers have been asked to work on less than basic pay of Rs 10,300 per month for the next three years.
