PHAGWARA: The family of a youth, who was allegedly murdered in Karnal on March 2, blocked National Highway-1 here on Tuesday, demanding immediate arrest of the accused. 17-year-old Sanyam Gupta’s half-burnt body was found near Uchani village in Karnal.

The family has accused the family of a girl, with whom he reportedly had an affair, of kidnapping and murdering the boy. The local police had registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC against unidentified people and are reportedly inquiring into suicide angle as well. Sanyam’s family members and local residents blocked the highway for half-an-hour, before protesting outside their house. The family also refused to cremate the body.

Accusing the police of delay in the matter and shielding the girl’s family, Sanyam’s father, Pankaj Gupta alleged it was a clear case of murder. “My son was kidnapped around 8pm on March 2. We had also filed his missing complaint. He was murdered in Karnal and the accused tried to burn his body, which shows it is a case of murder,” Pankaj said.

Following the incident, Phagwara superintendent of police (SP) Parminder Singh along with a police party reached the spot. Local Congress and BJP leaders also reached the spot to pacify the protesters.

The SP assured the family that they will take up the matter with the Karnal police. Following this, the protest was lifted in the evening and Sanyam’s body was cremated.
