KARNA: The special investigation team (SIT) has failed to get any evidence to prove Kurukshetra’s Sonu Malik’s involvement in the murder of his three children who were allegedly hacked to death by his cousin in Panchkula in November last year.

Sonu’s cousin Jagdeep Malik had earlier confessed to have killed his children — Sameer (11), Simran (8) and Samar (4) — and led the police to the spot where their bodies were found on November 21, two days after they went missing.

Jagdeep had told the police that he had killed the children in connivance with Sonu, who wanted to marry a girl, but later he changed his statement and said that he had killed them with an eye on 11 acres of agricultural land of Sonu.

Jagdeep had later committed suicide in Kurukshetra district jail.

The police conducted the polygraph test on Sonu but they did not get any evidence to prove his role. “There is no evidence to prove that Sonu was involved in the murder of his children, even after the polygraph test conducted on him”, Karnal SP Jashandeep Randhawa told HT.

The special investigation team (SIT) formed by chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar under inspector general of police (Karnal range) Subhash Yadav and SP Randhawa, is now likely to conclude the investigation.

“Soon the report will be submitted and as of now we have found that only Jagdeep was the main accused in the case and there is no evidence to prove involvement of anybody else,” he said.

The residents of Sonu’s Jhansa village on Sunday held a panchayat and decided to meet chief minister Khattar, alleging that the SIT has failed to submit its report even after three months even as the chief minister had assured them that it will conclude its probe in one month. “In a panchayat meeting, the villagers have decided to meet the CM in this regard,” Sarsa village Sarpanch Karambir Singh said.

Sonu is still in police custody as nobody from the village approached the police and court for his bail, he added.

› There is no evidence to prove that Sonu was involved in the murder of his children. We have so far found that his cousin was the main accused. JASHANDEEP RANDHAWA , Karnal SP
