NEW DELHI: Delhi University colleges may stop setting unrealistically high cut-off percentages for admission this year, with states and union territories promising the central government that they would stop the practice of inflating marks awarded in Class 12 board exams, easing the path for entry into undergraduate programmes. As many as 23 states and UTs have so far offered the assurance in response to a request by the government. The latest was Tamil Nadu, which on April 5 sent a letter to the ministry that exceptions would be in case of ambiguities in a paper or vagaries in evaluation process.

HIMACHAL TEACHER BEHIND BOTH LEAKS

NEW DELHI: A private schoolteacher, who was arrested from Una in Himachal Pradesh last week for leaking the CBSE Class 12 economics paper, had also allegedly leaked the Class 10 mathematics paper, Delhi police said on Thursday.

NEW DELHI: A private school teacher, who was arrested from Una in Himachal Pradesh last week for leaking CBSE economics paper of Class 12, had also allegedly leaked the Class 10 mathematics paper, Delhi Police said on Thursday.

Rakesh Kumar, a commerce teacher at DAV Centenary School in Una and superintendent of an examination centre in the area, was arrested on April 7 for photographing and circulating the economics paper on WhatsApp.

Two other employees of the school, clerk Amit Sharma and peon Ashok Kumar, were arrested for helping Rakesh.

The police on Thursday also arrested Rakesh’s sister-in-law, a Punjab resident, for conspiring with him. Two bank employees were also nabbed for negligence.

Joint commissioner of police (crime) Alok Kumar said the arrested woman’s son was appearing for the Class 12 exams and she had relatives whose children were in Class 10. She had told Rakesh that she could help him become principal of his school using her political connections, Kumar said.

“When we interrogated Rakesh Kumar , he admitted that along with the Class 12 paper he had also leaked the Class 10 question paper on March 23,” said Kumar.

The economics paper was held on March 26 and maths paper was held on March 28.

Police said that Rakesh had earlier told them that when he went to collect the question papers of computer science and informatics practices from a bank branch in Una on March 23, he picked up a packet of economics paper.

Kumar said the police suspected Rakesh’s role in second paper leak too as modus operandi in both cases was similar.

“He later admitted to have picked up a Class 10 mathematics paper bundle too. While he gave the bundle of Class 12 economics papers to Amit and Ashok, he kept the packet of maths papers with himself. Later, he opened the seal and took one question paper,” Kumar said.

According to the police, after taking photographs of the mathematics paper, Rakesh kept it back inside the cover and resealed it. He then allegedly called one of his students, who was also a friend’s son, to his residence and made him write down all the questions. He had called another student to copy the economics paper.

Police said he allegedly himself clicked pictures of the question paper and sent them to the woman. The woman in turn allegedly sent the paper to one of her relatives, after which they were shared multiple times on WhatsApp groups.
