ANIL SINGH, 37, SARPANCH OF HARODI VILLAGE, SUFFERED A GUNSHOT IN HIS NECK AND DIED ON WAY TO HOSPITAL

ROHTAK : A village sarpanch of Charkhi Dadri district was shot dead while trying to recover his friend’s robbed car from armed assailants, police said.

Anil Singh, 37, sarpanch of Harodi village, suffered a gunshot in his neck and died on way to hospital. He is survived by his wife and three school-going children.

The police said Anil, along with his six friends, had gone to a nearby hotel for dinner on Friday night in two cars. While he was driving his newly bought Bolero with three people, his friend Jagbir Singh was going in a Creta along with others. While coming back home, Anil stopped his car at a petrol pump, but his friends in Creta car went ahead.

Soon, he received a call from his friends who informed that some armed robbers snatched the Creta car at gunpoint.

“We rushed to help our friends whom we spotted standing on roadside. We took them in our car and asked where the robbers went,” said Sanjay Kumar, who was sitting with Anil.

“We drove towards the direction where we thought the robbers could have gone, and spotted them entering our village Harodi. They were four people going in one Scorpio and in our Creta car. Anil dropped us at the entrance of the village and asked us to block all the exit points with large stones, while he continued following the car,” Sanjay added.

The police said Anil chased the robbers and blocked their way by stopping his Bolero in front of their car. As they stopped, Anil got down from his car to confront them, but one of the robbers fired from inside the car and shot Anil dead.

The robbers tried to run away, but villagers gathered at the spot managed to overpower them and nabbed two of them who were in Creta car. They have been identified as Deepak of Rohtak and Parvinder of Charkhi Dadri.

The two others sitting in Scorpio managed to flee. The police said they found the Scorpio car abandoned at some distance, but the remaining two men continue to be on the run. A case has been registered under sections 302, 379B, 392 and 397 of IPC and under relevant sections of the Arms Act. The sarpanch’s body was handed over to family after postmortem.
