YAMUNANAGAR’S SANJEEV RAJPUT SHOOTS TO GLORY
: Sanjeev Rajput of Yamunanagar brought laurels to Haryana by winning the gold medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event of the Commonwealth Games on Saturday.
The 37-year-old Arjuna Awardee was born on January 5, 1981 in Jagadhri town of Yamunanagar. He went to SD Public School Jagadhri. At the age of 18, he joined the Indian Navy as a sailor and also started shooting practice.
Talking to HT, Sanjeev’s father Krishan Lal Rajput who lives in Jagadhari, said, “We are very happy over his achievement. He has brought laurels not only to Yamunanagar, but the entire country.”
He said Sanjeev retired from the Indian Navy about three years ago and bought a house in Faridabad to continue his shooting practice at Delhi as there was no shooting range in Haryana. “Sanjeev’s younger son Manoj runs a shop in Yamunangar and his elder sister Lalita is married,” he added.
PAST ACHIEVEMENTS
In 2004, Rajput won 3 golds and a silver medal at SAF Games, Islamabad. He won the bronze medal in the Men’s 50m Rifle Prone at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. He won a bronze medal in the 2006 Asian Games, Doha.
In July 2009, he won 4 gold and 2 silver medals from the SAG Shooting Championship, Dhaka.
He was also conferred with the Arjuna Award in August 2010 and was also adjudged the Services’ Best Sportsperson for the 2009–2010.
At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Sanjeev won a silver medal in the 50 m Rifle 3 positions event.
