A 23-year-old law student was shot dead by four men late on Wednesday night in Rohtak, police said. The deceased has been identified as Virender Singh, who studied law at Chhotu Ram College of Law in Rohtak. He was the son of assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Rajbir Singh who is deployed at Rohtak court complex.

Virender, along with his cousin and friends, had gone to buy food from a joint at Sheila bypass in the city after midnight. While he was coming back, the car-borne accused stopped him midway and shot him in the chest.

Recently, too, Virender and his friends had some altercation with the accused.

“The accused held a grudge against him and killed him to take revenge,” said a police official investigating the case.

The police have registered a case against Vicky boxer, Vijay boxer, Aman Bhanswal and Rahul Rathour on complaint of Virender’s cousin.

The four accsued have been booked under Sections 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and under relevant sections of the Arms Act.

Virender’s mother Reena, who lives in Jhajjar, said it was his birthday on Thursday. “I spoke to him just two hours ago and asked him to take care of himself,” she said, while sitting outside the PGIMS.
