RAIN FURY: 100 ANIMALS DIE IN RAJOURI

₹35,000 each provided as compensati­on to nine families of Bakarwal community

JAMMU : Heavy rainfall followed by a hailstorm killed at least 100 animals in Thanamandi area of Rajouri district on Tuesday.

According to Rajouri sheep husbandry officer Rakesh Manhas, the animals were a part of 700 animals that belonged to ten families of the nomadic Bakarwal community.

The nomadic Bakerwals, including 10 families of Mohd Farooq, Mohd Aslam and Mohd Bashir, Mohd Zubair, Kamma, Mohd Yasin, Kalam Din, Mohd Taris, Mohd Iqbal and Mohd Yaseen all residents of Androoth, were moving to the higher reaches with their livestock when they got trapped in landslide during the storm.

Police teams led by sub-divisional police officer, Thannamand­i, Iftikhar Chodhary coordinate­d the rescue operation of trapped livestock while another team of sheep husbandry reached the spot for treatment of injured livestock and formulatio­n of relief cases for animals died due to natural calamity.

A cloudburst was also reported from Rajdhani area and efforts to clear the debris was on while the rescue team managed to clear a long stretch of road in Manyal area.

Sub-district magistrate, Thanamandi, Afzal Mirza said, “We have provided ₹35,000 each to nine families of nomadic Bakerwals whose livestock were killed in the hailstorm as an interim relief.”

The state government on Wednesday said the standing crops spread over 100 hectares and over a dozen orchards were damaged by heavy rains and hailstorm which hit the Thanamandi area of Rajouri last evening, officials said. SDM, Thanamandi, said, “Compensati­on would be provided to the affected people after the assessment report.”
