Dispute resolved, ‘diwan’ back at Takht

-

With the Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh resolving the dispute between the two factions of dhadis, the dhadi ‘diwan’ was held at the Takht on Wednesday after a gap of eight days.

On directions of the jathedar, the ‘diwan’, which is a daily feature at the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, was suspended on May 1 following a conflict over performance hours between the two faction of dhadis— Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Shiromani Dhadi Sabha and Miri Piri Shiromani Dhadi Sabha.

Dhadis are traditional performers who sing ballads of war heroes with a sarangi, a stringed instrument, and a dhad, a small drum from 9am to 4pm at the Akal Takht.

The jathedar on Tuesday called both the factions at Akal Takht secretariat. Redressing the grievances of both the factions, the jathedar directed that the associations will not be the criteria to distribute performance hours and maintained that it will be distributed to the Dhadi jathas individually.

As per the jathedar’s direction, both the factions will give lists of total number of jathas to Dharam Parchar wing of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which will then assign duties of performance to the jathas.

The diwan was staged normally on Wednesday as both the factions have accepted to follow the jathedar’s directions .

Earlier, the Akal Takht jathedar’s move drew flak from the Sikh community. Some organisations termed it as conspiracy to end the tradition of staging ‘diwan’.

Barred from staging their ‘diwan’, the jathas of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Shiromani Dhadi Sabha on May 5 performed the ‘diwan’ at the Heritage Street near Golden Temple as a sign of protest.
