CONSTABLE KILLED AS MILITANTS ON ‘WEAPON HUNT’ ATTACK POLICE POST IN VALLEY

A constable was killed in a suspected militant attack on a police post set up to guard members of the minority community residing in central Kashmir on Friday. The militants wanted to snatch weapons from the policemen, the officials said.
Police said, constable Shamim Ahmad was unarmed when militants appeared outside a police post at Wardwan in Budgam district, where a few families of the minority community live.
“The militants attempted to force their entry inside the guard post at Budgam and held-up Shamim Ahmad outside his post who was unarmed and was going to offer Friday prayers at a local mosque in the vicinity,” a police spokesman said, adding that Ahmad was asked to lead towards the post but he raised an alarm.
“The alert jawans inside the post successfully foiled the weapon snatching bid. In the process, the said policeman was injured who consequently succumbed to his injury,” the official said.
Ahmad was a resident of Check Hanjan Yaripora in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
Police sources said snatching weapons from the policemen seemed to be the motive behind the attack. The spokesman stated that the attempt was “successfully thwarted”.
The area was immediately cordoned to track the attackers but to no avail.
Local reports said that stone pelting youth clashed with security forces who were heading towards Wardwan village following the attack. Police, however, refused to comment.
Last month, suspected militants took four rifles from policemen deputed at a checkpost in Hyderpora.
