POLICE FAIL TO IDENTIFY THOSE WHO BEAT UP HEAD CONSTABLE RAMNEET SINGH

FEROZEPUR : A day after a policeman was manhandled outside the deputy commissioner’s office during the visit of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira to the town on Monday, the department is yet to identify the accused. This is even as photographs of the mob beating up the cop, head constable Ramneet Singh, were published in newspapers on Tuesday.

All that has come in the name of police action is the registration of a case of obstructing a public servant against 10-15 unidentified people. On Monday, AAP supporters and members of the Border Area Sangharsh Committee had entered into a scuffle over Khaira meeting two women, who have been sitting on a fast unto death, opposite the DC office, since April 23, to stake their claim to 26 acres. Counterclaims have come in for the same piece of land.

As Khaira was moving out, members of the Border Area Sangharsh Committee asked Khaira to meet their representative too. On his refusal to do so, they tried to block the way of his vehicle. In the meantime, a policeman, who came forward to try and clear the crowd, was manhandled.

“Congress men, pretending to be members of the Border Area Sangharsh Committee, thrashed a police man. Owing to political pressure, no action was taken,” Khaira claimed.

District Congress chief Chamkaur Singh Dhindsa rubbished the charges of Khaira. “Khaira’s Ferozepur visit was meant to play politics,” Dhindsa claimed.

Ferozepur SSP Pritam Singh said, “We have not received any written complaint in the matter. On the basis of videos and photos that have gone viral on social media and other mediums, a case has been registered.”
