KARNAL: Around six months after a 45-year-old woman went missing from Kheri village of Kaithal district, police have recovered her body from a well and booked her daughter-in-law on charges of murder.

Police said accused Jassi, 30, had illicit relations with Praveen Kumar of the same village and her mother in-law Gurmeet Kaur opposed this relationship. Jassi allegedly killed her with the help of Praveen and then dumped her body in a well on the outskirts of the village.

They said the accused’s husband is a labourer who had no idea about the extra-marital affair of his wife and his mother’s murder.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Rajaund police station in-charge Naveen Kumar said the matter came to light as Praveen died on Wednesday following a brief illness. When Parveen’ brother Angrej Singh looked into his mobile phone, he found a recorded conversation between Jassi and Praveen, in which they could be heard talking about dumping Gurmeet’s body in a well. He said that Angrej provided the audio recording to the Kaithal police, which led to recovery of Gurmeet’s body from the well.

He said the body of the deceased was sent to the civil hospital for postmortem and an FIR was registered against Jassi under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC. The police said that though Gurmeet had been missing for the past six months, nobody had filed a police complaint in this regard.
