CONTRACTOR’S BROTHER, OVERSEEING THE WORK, JUMPED IN AFTER WORKERS INHALED METHANE GAS

A man was killed while trying to save two workers, who had entered a drain to clean a sewer line in Suryavihar colony in Sector 9.

The victim, identified as 25-year-old Vicky, was overseeing the work. He is the brother of the municipal contractor Rajesh Kumar to whom the work was allotted.

Police said the victim jumped into the sewer as he heard the two workers shouting for help after inhaling the noxious methane gas. They were also trapped as the earth inside the sewer line had caved in.

While Vicky managed to help the duo come out with the help of safety belts, he couldn’t come out safe as he fell unconscious due to the release of methane inside the drain.

A huge chunk of earth had caved in inside the drain because of which the 25-year-old could not come out, the police said.

The victim had jumped inside the drain at the spur of the moment and was not wearing any safety equipment, a police officer said.

The other two workers were identified as Raj Kumar and Anwar. Although they were in critical condition after inhaling methane inside the drain, they survived as they were wearing safety belts and were tied to the crane at the site. “The victim was my nephew and he had been working with his brother for last several years. He jumped into the drain to save the two workers who shouted for help after inhaling methane. They panicked as the earth inside the sewer line had also caved in. Although he managed to rescue them as they were wearing safety belts, he got stuck in the heap of mud and eventually succumbed to the noxious gas,” Bansi, the victim’s uncle, said.

Vicky hailed from Bhiwani and was unmarried. He had been working with his brother Rajesh, who is a municipal contractor. The condition of the other two workers, who were admitted in the ICU of Aryan hospital, were reported to be stable.

Soon after the incident, the 25-year-old was taken to a private hospital along with other two workers, but he was declared brought dead. “This was an unfortunate incident and everything happened on the spur of the moment. He jumped inside the drain without thinking of his personal safety,” his uncle said.
