23-yr-old undertrial commits suicide in Patti sub-jail

HAD BEEN ALLEGEDLY UPSET SINCE HE WAS BOOKED BY PATTI POLICE FOR ALLEGEDLY ABETTING THE SUICIDE OF HIS WIFE

TARN TARAN :A 23-year-old undertrial allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Patti subjail’s bathroom during the intervenin­g night of Saturday and Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Gurjant Singh of Kairon village, 18 km from here. Gurjant had been allegedly upset since he was booked by the Patti police for allegedly abetting the suicide of his wife last month.

Gurjant’s brother-in-law (sister’s husband) Major Singh said, “In March, Gurjant was married to Mandeep Kaur of the same village. Around a month after marriage, he went to Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh (UP) as a truck driver.

Around a week after he went to Kanpur, his wife committed suicide and her parents got Gurjant booked for abetting her suicide. When Mandeep ended her life, Gurjant was in Kanpur and arrested by the police upon his return. Since then he had been was in depression.”“We got informatio­n from Patti sub-jail authoritie­s that Gurjant committed suicide in the jail,” he said.

Deputy superinten­dent of police (DSP) of the sub jail, Harpreet Singh, said on Saturday night Gurjant was absolutely fine as he was spotted talking with other jail inmates at around 10:30 PM.

“At 12:50 am, jail authoritie­s found Gurjant’s body in the prison’s bathroom,” he said, and added that ‘he used a ‘loi’ (a woollen shawl ) to hang himself with the bathroom’s window grill’.

The body of the victim was taken out from the sub jail on Sunday morning in the presence of judicial magistrate (JM) first class Vishav Jyoti.

SHO, Patti City, Rajesh Kakkar, said the police had filed proceeding­s under section 174 of the CrPC. “The body of the deceased has been sent to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar, for postmortem. The matter is being probed by the JM and further action will be taken after receiving the inquiry report,” he said.
