Separatists’ march: Restrictions to continue in Srinagar today
SRINAGAR: Police on Sunday imposed restrictions in several parts of the old city ahead of the death anniversaries of Molvi Muhammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone. Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) has called for a march towards Eidgah to commemorate the death anniversaries of two leaders on Monday.
Apprehending protests, police and paramilitary forces were deployed in many parts of the old city and roads leading towards historical Jamia Masjid and adjacent localities were sealed by placing concertina wires and barricades. Additional troops were also deployed in the city to prevent any protests.
“At many places in old city, residents were not allowed to move out of their houses. Both police and the CRPF did not allow people to move out of the locality,’’ said Mohammad Shafi, a resident of Nowhatta in old city.
Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq criticised the government for imposing restrictions in the old city for sealing many parts of the old city.
“Leadership under detention while downtown continues to be put under curfew & restrictions! Mirwaiz Manzil Rajouri Kadal completely sealed and barricaded! Repression for the sake of “Development” The new mantra for Kashmir resolution !,” Mirwaiz wrote on Twitter. Officials said restrictions in the old city will continue as they have apprehensions that separatists will try to take out protest in the city.
