Now, water supply to Malout suspended
MALOUT(MUKTSAR):Four days after the spill of molasses from a sugar mill into the Beas, the contaminated water entered the reservoir of Malout waterworks here.
The water supply and sanitation department in Muktsar remained on toes throughout the day to prevent any untoward incident. A team of the pollution control board team also collected samples from the water works.
Water supply and sanitation department sub-divisional officer Rakesh Mohan Makkar said: “After getting information of contaminated water entering the Rajasthan and Sirhind canals, we closed the inlets of the reservoirs, besides disconnecting the water supply to the town.”
“The capacity of the Malout water works in 1 crore gallons and there was just a few thousand litres of water in the pipeline which got mixed,” he said.
Pollution control board SDO Daljeet Singh said they collected water samples from the Malout waterworks and the dissolved oxygen level in the water was 8.5 mg/L. Normally, it should be 7-9 mg/L, he said.
