ROHTAK:Almost half the students failed the Class 10 exams of Haryana board, the results of which were announced by the Board of School Education Haryana (BSEH) on Monday. The overall pass percentage this time was 51.15%, about one point higher than last year’s 50.49%.

The board said total 3,64,800 students appeared in the exams, of whom, 1,86,586 passed and 15,526 got compartments. As many as 1,62,688 students failed the exams.

The students fared poorly in all mandatory subjects, even Hindi, which is the mother tongue of most in Haryana. As per available data, over 50,000 students failed in Hindi while more than one lakh failed in English, mathematics, science and social studies.

As always, girls outshone boys by a large margin. The pass percentage of girl students was 55%, eight points higher than that of boys’ 47.61%. The students living in rural areas of the state outperformed their urban counterparts with a pass percentage of 52%, two points higher than 50% of the urban students.

The government schools in the state performed the worst. Only 44% students from these schools could make a cut, highlighting a systematic failure in teaching that neglects caring for outcome. In private schools, 60% students passed the exams.

HT talked to teachers and educationists who felt that besides the serious problem of shortage of faculty, the no-detention policy, as per which all students have to be promoted to next class up to Class 9, were the factors responsible for the poor show as their learning abilities remained low, which reflected in the Class 12 and now in Class 10 in the Haryana school board exams.

Kartik of Nav Durga School in Jind topped the exams by scoring 99.6%. The second position was shared by Selina Yadav of Jeevan Jyoti School, Rewari; Sonali of Saraswati High School, Sirsa and Hari Om of Bas Vidya Niketan, Palwal — all three of them scored 99%. Ria of SMB Geeta School, Ambala; Preeti of Paras Sr Sec School, Mahendragarh and Jigyasa of Tagore School, Panipat, jointly bagged the third spot by scoring 98.8%.

Haryana education minister Ram Bilas Sharma said the Board has introduced ‘digilockers’ on its website from where students can download their result and certificates any time. The students can also view their results on the mobile app — Education Board Bhiwani Haryana— from Play Store, he said.
