Five of Batala family killed in J&K mishap

Five members of a family, including a child, from Batala in Gurdaspur district were killed and eight were injured in a road mishap on the Jammu-Pathankot highway in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir on the intervenin­g night of Thursday and Friday.

Police said the mishap took place when the Toyota Innova car they were travelling in hit a parapet and overturned at Tapyal at around 2am.

The vehicle was speeding, the police said.

The deceased have been identified as Lovepreet Singh, who was driving the vehicle, his sister Veenus, their sister-in-law Poonam alias Punnu (30), Poonam’s son Jashan (1) and Lovepreet’s aunt Geeta Devi (60).

The injured were identified as Rahul (23), Atras (24), Raju (30), Roop Singh (45), Monu (26), Neetu (25) and her two children.

The injured were taken to the Government Medical College, Jammu.

A pall of gloom descended on Ahmadabad village, 10 kilometres from here, as the bodies of five family members killed road accident near Samba in J&K arrived on Friday afternoon. The accident took place when the family was returning home after participat­ing in a function.
