Rohtak university to start master’s degrees in film and television

ROHTAK: State University of Performing and Visual Arts (SUPVA), Rohtak, has got approval from the central government to start master’s degree programmes in the film and television discipline, vicechancellor Prof Rajbir Singh said on Friday.

SUPVA is the only university in north India that houses a government-run film and television institute, and with introduction of master’s courses, it will compete with the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, the V-C said.

The approval for the courses was recently given in principle by the government during a meeting of the higher education authorities recently, Singh said.

He said the institute will start master’s degrees in media production and digital imaging, besides a post-graduate diploma in screenplay writing.

“These courses will commence in 2019, as we will first ensure that the university is well-equipped with required tools to start them,” Singh said. The university will also simultaneously start master’s degree courses in design, visual communication and urban and regional planning at the three other institutes it houses at its 18-acre campus in Sector 6 here.

At present, the university offers 14 undergraduate courses only. The VC said as part of its community outreach programme, the university has decided to hold workshops in disciplines such as photography, clay modelling, natural dyeing and block printing for all interested citizens in June.

“Anyone belonging to any age group is welcome to attend these workshops,” he added.
