CHANDIGARH:The Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday sought status reports on challans being issued to traffic offenders in Punjab and Haryana and Chandigarh by July 13.The high court bench of acting chief justice AK Mittal and justice TS Dhindsa also asked both the states and UT to get details of five offenders each such as name, address etc.

The court was hearing a petition, initiated in 2017, on the issue of rising number of accidents involving women not wearing helmets.

During the hearing, the Haryana government submitted a status report on challans it has issued in the month of May. The state has challaned 1,15,988 traffic offenders out of which 33,703 were found riding two-wheelers without helmets.

The report from Haryana was sought on May 22 after amicus curiae in the case, Namit Gupta, had pointed out that in Narnaul 639 challans were issued out of which 629 were issued for zebra crossing violations but the his team did not find zebra crossing in the town. He had also produced videos showing police gypsies becoming mute spectator to twowheeler riders without helmets.

Meanwhile, the UT administration told court that it was in the process of notifying rules for women on riding two wheelers. UT has proposed to make it mandatory for all women to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers.
