SHIMLA: Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur on Friday held a meeting with senior officers of the state government through video conferenci­ng from Chamba to review water supply situation in Shimla town.

The CM was informed that the Shimla municipal corporatio­n received 23.50 million litres a day (MLD) water on Friday. It was informed that 1 MLD of water was received from Ghandal which was distribute­d according to the timings scheduled in Kusumpti, Pantha Ghatti, Chhota Shimla, Vikasnagar, Patiyog, Kangnadhar, New Shimla and Khalini.

He was also informed that 1.70 lakh litre of water was supplied to different parts of the town on Friday through tankers. However, water will be supplied to Bharari, Ruldu Bhatta, Kaithu, Anadale, Summer Hill, Totu, Manjhiyat, Kachhi Ghati, Boleauganj, Tutikandi, Kanlog, Nabha and Fagli areas on Saturday.

The CM directed that water should be distribute­d strictly in accordance with the scheduled time table. Irrigation and public health minister Mahender Singh Thakur directed to install pumps on the tankers and asked to distribute water. He also asked to install hand pumps at identified spots. Chief secretary Vineet Chawdhry directed to keep the water ATM installed on the Ridge functional round the clock to facilitate the locals and tourists.

MAN THREATENS SELF-IMMOLATION

Even as people on Friday dithered from taking to streets over water crisis, police have arrested a person from Sanjauli locality who had allegedly threatened to immolate himself to protest water scarcity in the region.

“We arrested a person who had threatened to immolate himself and later, produced him in a local court,” Shimla superinten­dent of police Omapati Jamwal said.

The court warned and directed the accused to dissuade from such action that flares up public sentiments.

Meanwhile, deputy commission­er Amit Kashyap, who held meeting with councillor­s said the town has been divided into three zones for ensuring water supply.

“Separate tankers have been earmarked for wards,” he said.
