SIGNIFICANCE

According to officials in the social justice and empowerment ministry, the nodal ministry for drafting and implementing policy for the welfare of SCs/STs and other backward classes (OBCs), last week’s court ruling will allow the department of personnel and training (DoPT) to begin the process of giving promotions after fol- lowing due process. The government is also hopeful that the final decision by a constitution bench will be “favourable”. The government also expects that once DoPT resumes the process of promotions, the problem of inadequate representation SC/STs and OBCs in top positions will also be addressed.
