The Khanna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Navjot Singh Mahal has transferred four police officials for allegedly not extending help to a 19-year-old accident victim, who succumbed to his injuries in the hospital nine days later.

The incident took place on the night of June 11 when the victim, Harshit Kumar, was driving back home. As he reached near Alaur village, he was hit by speeding truck that was trying to escape the checkpoint set up near Pristine Mall in Khanna on National Highway-1.

The victim father, Vinod Kumar of Khanna, who is a trader by profession, said, “My son suffered severe injuries in the accident but instead of extending help and providing medical help, the police officials present at the checkpoint turned mute spectators.”

Kumar added that it was the family members, who took him to the hospital. “When we found out about the hospital, we rushed to the spot and took Harshit to a local hospital.”

“Sensing his condition, doctors referred him to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where he succumbed to injuries on Wednesday. If he would have been provided timely first-aid, his life could have been saved,” he added.

On Wednesday after his son passed away, Vinod Kumar made a complaint to SSP Navjot Singh Mahal. Following the complaint, the SSP transferred assistant sub-inspector Sukhbir Singh, head constable Mohinder Chand and two constables with immediate effect and marked an inquiry. All the four have been deputed at Sadar police station.

The SSP said that this is a serious matter and police officials should act sensibly in such emergency situations. He added that the truck driver was arrested the same day.
