BAGGING 2,958 MARKS OUT OF 4,000, CITY IMPROVES ITS RANKING FROM 65 LAST YEAR

minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s constituency Karnal has been ranked as the cleanest city in Haryana and the second among northern states by securing 41th position in the country under the Swachh Survekshan-2018.

Karnal has improved its ranking from the 65th slot last year and is the second cleanest city after Chandigarh, among the northern states of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Karnal bagged 2,958 marks out of 4,000.

Karnal and Rohtak are Haryana’s two cities among the 100 top cities of the country. Rohtak has scored the 89th position.

Notably, the Karnal MC has taken several initiatives to improve cleanliness in the city like night sweeping, door-todoor garbage collection and installation of mobile and e-toilets in the city, which helped it improve the ranking.

As many as 4,203 cities in the country were covered under the Swachh Survekshan this year.

Karnal deputy commissioner (DC) Aditya Dahiya has congratulated the people of Karnal for the achievement and said it was a result of the team work.

When contacted, former municipal corporation (MC) commissioner Priyanka Soni, who took several initiatives to improve cleanliness in Karnal, said, “It is a result of the collective efforts of the citizens and sanitation workers of Karnal as they extended all cooperation to the MC.”

She added, “We also took several initiatives like biometric attendance of safai karamcharis. We also mobilised the people of Karnal to download the Swachhta App.”

Meanwhile, other cities of the state lagged far behind Karnal, with Gurgaon ranked at 105th position, followed by Panchkula at 142nd, Hisar 146th, Sonepat 156th, Ambala 159th and Kurukshetra 199th.

Ranked at 313th position, Yamunanagar is at the bottom of the list of 18 cities of Haryana covered in the survey.

With Gurugram finishing at 105 among 4,203 cities in the Swachh Survekshan survey rankings released on Saturday, the city’s cleanliness and sanitation standards have seen a slight improvement. However, it is way behind some other regions in the national capital territory such as Ghaziabad, which has ranked 36 in the survey this year.

In 2017, the city had bagged the 112th spot in a list of 434 cities. A year before that, its rank was 36 in a survey of 73 cities.

However, the survey results of 2015 were the real eye-opener for Gurugram, when it had ranked 466 among 476 cities.

In this year’s rankings, Gurugram scored 2,564 out of 4,000 points. HTC
