9 months after teen’s murder, Dirba family seeks CBI probe
SANGRUR : Accusing the police of shielding the real accused, the family of a 18-year-old scrap dealer, brutally murdered in Dirba in September last year, has demanded a CBI probe.
The victim, Mohan Gupta’s, mother had even written a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in May, seeking its intervention to expedite investigation into the case and accusing the police of bias. On May 29, the PMO had written to the state chief secretary asking for appropriate action. On Friday, inspector general AS Rai held a meeting and reviewed the case.
The Bihar family claims that their neighbour Kewal Gupta killed Mohan. However, in police record, Kewal is the complainant and unidentified people were booked on September 7, 2017. “My son was murdered due to business enmity. The mastermind was Kewal who threatened us a couple of days before the murder. Kewal suspected that my son was accusing him of scrap theft,” said Poonam Devi, 45, the mother.
“Police have arrested two men, but the real offender is free. We have no faith in the local police,” said Vishnu Gupta, 55, Mohan’s father, adding, “We demand a CBI probe.” Dirba DSP Yogesh Sharma said, “The two accused have confessed. We have even recovered sharp-edged weapons. We have filed a chargesheet. If there are directions from the IG, we will begin a fresh probe.”
