ROHTAK: The suspended sarpanch of Pipli village in Sonepat, who had been absconding for the past one month after shooting dead a man and critically injuring another, was arrested from Sukhdev dhaba in Murthal on Sunday.

The police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 on information leading to his arrest.

The accused, identified as Ram Nivash, was recently suspended from the post of sarpanch by district administration in the wake of criminal cases lodged against him. Nivash had on June 12 shot at a 35-year-old man of his village over suspicion that he filed an RTI application against him.

He also gave death threats to six other villagers whom he suspected to be involved in filing the RTI that could have exposed his land fraud. On June 24, he gunned down a 24-year-old village youth identified as Ashish Dahiya. The police had formed nine teams to nab Nivash, besides deploying 30 cops in Pipli village and providing gunmen to eight residents who feared they could be the next target of the village head. The fear of Nivash among the villagers was so much that they had stopped coming out of their houses for days.

“The special investigation team (SIT) of the Sonepat Police nabbed Ram Nivash when he had come to Sukhdev Dhaba. A Scorpio car has been seized from him. During preliminary interrogation, he has confessed to the murder and other firing incidents. He said he had nursed a grudge against those who filed RTI against him,” SIT in-charge Jitender Singh said.

He said Nivash will be produced in the court on Monday and his maximum remand will be sought to nab his associates.
