Two injured as inmates clash in Karnal jail

-

KARNAL :Two inmates of the Karnal district jail on Sunday sustained injuries as two groups of prisoners clashed in the jail ward.

The injured have been identified as Randeep Singh of Alewa village of Jind district and Sunil Kumar of Panipat district.

Randeep is a hardcore criminal who was lodged in the jail after he was convicted in a murder case. Sunil was convicted in an attempt to murder case.

Talking to Hindustan Times, jail superintendent Sher Singh superintendent said, “Two prisoners Randeep and Sunil sustained injuries as two groups of prisoners clashed in the jail.”

He said around a dozen prisoners, belonging to Randeep Kala gang and Devender Kala gang, had heated arguments leading to the clash.

He, however, denied that the inmates had weapons inside the jail, but said that they used utensils and spoons to attack each other.

He said the injured, who sustained injuries on their faces and necks, were rushed to Kalpana Chawla Medical College and Hospital where their condition was said to be stable.

Virender Kumar, investigation officer, said that the FIR was being registered and investigation was on.

The incident exposed serious security lapses on the part of authorities of the Karnal jail.

Notably, a 55-year-old inmate, Avtar Singh of Gurdaspur district of Punjab, had committed suicide by hanging himself with his turban in the jail hospital on May 29.

In November 2016, a Lashkare-Toiba terrorist Syed Abdul Karim alias Tunda was attacked by two co-prisoners in the jail.
