LUDHIANA:A 101-year-old woman, who was locked by her daughter for the past 10 days at her house in Gujjarwal village, about 30km from here, was rescued by the District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) on Thursday.

The raid at the house resulted in an emotional reunion of the 101-year-old with her 60-yearold son, who had abandoned her for not giving him his share of property many years ago.

The woman’s daughter locked her in the house and left for Phillaur saying that she had to attend to her husband who had been operated upon.

Chief judicial magistratecum-secretary, DLSA, Gurpreet Kaur said they got information that the elderly woman, who has a fading eyesight and is in frail health, was being fed by neighbours in the village from a small window of the house as her daughter had not returned for the last 10 days.

A team of the DLSA, along with panel advocate Harsimrat Kaur and sub-inspector Ramanpreet Singh of Jodhan police station, broke open the lock of the house and rescued the woman, Krishna Dasi.

As the DLSA team made calls to her daughter, they were told that she left her mother owing to family commitments. The daughter disclosed that she had no option but to leave her mother like this.

The team officials then contacted the woman’s son, Gopal, a daily wage earner, who lives in the same village.

“Gopal met his mother and after counselling, agreed to take care of her,” said Kaur.
