30 injured as mini-bus overturns in Gurdaspur

GURDASPUR: At least 30 people were injured, four of them seriously, after a mini-bus overturned at Chaguwal village in Gurdaspur district on Friday morning.

Those injured included passengers as well as three students who were walking to their school and got trapped under the toppled bus. 14 people had to be admitted to the Gurdaspur civil hospital, while the others, who had sustained minor injuries, were discharged after first-aid treatment.

Two of the seriously injured identified as Rakesh Kumar, 16, a Class-11 student of a school in Varsola and Taljinder Kaur, 35, a resident of Aali Nangal village, were referred to the Amritsar Government Hospital.

Rakesh, along with his classmates Stephen and Geeta, was on his way to school on foot when the accident took place.

The bus (PB-06-E-2932) had 45 passengers on board and was on its way to Gurdaspur from Dostpur when its driver lost control over the vehicle while taking a turn towards Chaguwal village on Hardochhan­ni Road.

The passengers were rescued with the help of villagers. A police party from Sadar police station also arrived at the spot and took the injured to hospital. Bus driver Gurpreet Singh was also hurt in the accident.

ASI Hardev Singh said a case under Sections 279, 337 and 338 of the IPC has been registered at the Sadar police station.
