SI, ASI held for letting off drug peddler after taking ₹8,000 bribe in Amritsar

AMRITSAR: The district rural police on Monday arrested a sub-inspector (SI) and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) for their alleged involvemen­t in letting off a drug peddler by taking a bribe of ₹8,000. As per the police, both the cops have been arrested after the drug peddler, arrested on July 25, named them for letting him off after taking bribe, during his interrogat­ion.

The accused cops have been identified as SI Paramjit Singh, posted at Naka (barricadin­g) Navan Jeevan, and ASI Ashwini Kumar, posted at Amritsar rural police line.

(SSP-rural Parampal Singh said, “ASI Rashpal Singh of Gharinda police station, along with other police personnel, had arrested one Navtej Singh of Gharinda with 5gm heroin.”

“After the recovery from Navtej, we registered a case under sections 21-61-85 of the NDPS Act against him. During interrogat­ion, Navtej, who is also a heroin addict, told the police that he had been working as a heroin smuggler. He also told us that in the first week of this month, both the accused cops had reached him and threatened him to arrest him under the NDPS Act. He told that both the policemen demanded ₹10,000 for letting him off but he gave them ₹8,000 to them,” he said.

The SSP said on the basis of the peddler’s confession, “We have arrested the duo policemen and registered a case under sections 7, 8, 13 (1) (D) of Corruption Act and 29 of the NDPS Act against them.”
