Two teenaged friends, aged 15, were crushed under a train when they were clicking selfie on a rail overbridge near Katana Sahib village in Ludhiana district’s Doraha on Sunday, with one of their friends having a narrow escape.

The bodies of the victims, identified as Yuvraj Singh, a Class 7 student, and Gaurav Kumar, a Class 8 student, of Rampur village, were cut into pieces.

After the incident, their friend fled from the spot and did not inform anyone. The commuters who witnessed the incident informed the government railway police (GRP). According to a GRP official the eyewitnesses saw the boys taking a selfie on the bridge constructed over a canal.

They apparently did not notice the train playing on the Chandigarh-Ludhiana route.

“We did not find any mobile phone or camera at the spot. It is possible that their friend, who escaped unhurt, could have taken the gadget along. We are been trying to trace him,” GRP assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Raghwinder Singh said.

“After the incident, we made announcements in the surrounding villages for the identification of the victims. In the evening, two families contacted the police and identified the bodies,” he said.

The families said the two had left home in the morning to paying obeisance at Gurdwara Degsar Sahib Patshahi Dasvi at Katana. But they had no idea about the third boy.

Yuvraj’s family has requested the police to delay the post-mortem for a day as they are waiting for his father, who lives in Dubai, to reach home for the funeral. He was only son of his parents. Gaurav’s father is a tailor.

The police have started inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in the case.
