1 killed, another injured in army firing in Ramban, FIR registered

: A local was killed and another injured when army personnel allegedly opened fire on them in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.

Mohammad Rafiq Gujjar, 28, and Shakeel Ahmad, 30, both residents of Gool were allegedly fired upon by soldiers of the 58 Rashtriya Rifles when they were leaving Kohli village around 4am.

Rafiq was moving with cattle and had stopped for a night at Ahmed’s house on Saturday night.

In the morning, when they came out of Manzoor's house for their onward journey, the army personnel manning the area started firing.

While Rafiq died on the spot, Ahmad was injured in the firing and was shifted to hospital.

Meanwhile defence PRO said an operation was launched by the army on basis of specific intelligen­ce inputs in Koli area of Gool Tehsil, Ramban district.

At 3.45am, the army patrol saw some suspicious activity. The suspected individual­s were challenged by the army as per standing operating procedure(SOP). On being challenged, the suspected individual­s opened fire upon the army patrol. On this, the army patrol retaliated the firing.

Meanwhile, senior police officers from the district rushed to the spot and after examining the incident details, lodged an FIR against the army.

Ramban SSP Mohan Lal said, "Police have registered an FIR against the army party for their alleged role in the incident.”
