AMRITSAR: Civil Lines police on Monday claimed to have solved a case of carjacking with the arrest of four members of a robbers’ gang who had on May 27 snatched a car from a trader’s son at gunpoint from outside his house.

The accused have been identified as Akashdeep Singh of Nag Kalan village, Jobanjit Singh of Malia village, Harmanpreet Singh of Bathe Bhaini village and Mulakhraj Singh of Kairon village.

Police said they have also recovered the pistol used by the accused to threaten the victim and the robbed car. Police said those arrested were also wanted in three more cases, including two of robbery.

Victim Udaybir Singh was robbed of his car at 9pm on May 27 by few miscreants, who had left their bike at the spot before fleeing in the stolen car.

The incident was also captured in closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed near Udaybir’s house.

Addressing a press conference, police commissioner SS Srivastva said, “A team of senior police officials was formed to trace the accused. On Saturday, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Arun Kumar, who is also in-charge of Lawrence Road police post, detained one of the accused, Akashdeep Singh, on suspicion. During his interrogation, Akashdeep told the police that he along with three others had snatched the car from Udaybir.” He said after Akashdeep’s confession, police teams were sent to nab the other accused. “We arrested the other three accused from their houses on Monday,” Srivastva said.

“On May 25, the accused had stolen a motorcycle from Anand Park near Ranjeet Avenue. On May 30, they had looted ₹44,000 from a petrol pump at gunpoint in Naurangabad village on Goindwal Sahib road in Tarn Taran. On May 31, they had robbed a Maruti Suzuki Swift from Kapurthala-Jalandhar road after hitting its driver with a baseball bat,” he added.

“After producing the accused in a local court, we will take their remand. We are expecting more recoveries upon their further interrogation,” he said.

The accused have already been booked under Sections 379B (snatching by force) of the IPC and Sections 25-54-59 of the Arms Act.
