Seven arrested with contraband

JALANDHAR : The rural police arrested seven peddlers during a raid at Kalyanpur village on Monday and recovered 147 intoxicant tablets and 10 boxes of illicit liquor.

Besides this, 60 grams of intoxicant substances, a Maruti Esteem Car and six two-wheelers were also seized.

The accused has been identified as Kewal Singh, 65, Vijay Kumar, 37, Budhu, 27, Jaspal, 31, Harjinder Singh, 36, Niranjan Das, 33 and Jasvir Singh, 24, all residents of Kalyanpur village. Senior superinten­dent of police Navjot Singh Mahal said that the police got a tip-off that drug and illicit liquor trade was being done in the village.

“The police teams were deployed at special checkpoint­s in village to nab the accused. Seven peddlers were arrested during the search operation that began at 5 am.”

“Kewal Singh, who was nabbed along with 60 grams intoxicant substance, has 29 cases registered against him at various police stations. Jasbir Singh was also arrested with 147 intoxicant tablets,” he said.

A case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrop­ic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against Kewal Singh and Jasbir Singh. While the other five accused were booked under Section 61 of Excise Act and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code at Lambra police station.
