AMRITSAR: The rural police claimed to have solved the murder case of former Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) sarpanch, here on Saturday.

Six people, including a gangster from Khiala village, near Amritsar have been arrested in this connection. The police have also recovered the sword used in the crime.

The accused have been identified as Dilpreet Singh, Lakhwinder Singh aka Lakha, Sarwan Singh aka Samma, Gurbhej Singh aka Jabbar, gangster Gurbhej Singh aka Bheja and Ladda Singh of Khiala village.

The victim, Sarabjit Singh Zaildar ,55, had gone to his field — on the day of incident — August 7. His body, with a severed head, was found near a tubewell at noon.

Zaildar was elected as the sarpanch of Khiala village twice.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Amritsar rural, Parampal Singh, while addressing a press conference, said, following a complaint by the victim’s nephew, Samsher Singh, the Lopoke police had booked three persons including Bheja in the murder case.

“After the interrogation, station house officer (SHO), Lopoke police station, Kapil Kaushal, arrested the six accused persons,” he said.

The victim and accused Dilpreet Singh were involved in a land dispute, said the SSP. “However, Bheja had an old enmity with the former sarpanch, while the other four accused were embroiled in a street dispute with the victim,” he said.

The SSP said, “During his interrogation, Dilpreet confessed that he was instigated by the other accused persons to murder the former sarpanch.” Accused Sarwan Singh had also offered ₹5 lakh to Dilpreet besides assuring to sort out his land dispute if he would kill Sarabjit Singh, said police. Sarwan had also provided the sword, used in crime, to Dilpreet, said the SSP.

“Dilpreet’s father had transferred around three acres in the name of his nephew, Hinda, at Kakkar village with the consent of the former sarpanch, following which Dilpreet had been nursing a grudge against the victim,” said police.

The arrested accused will be produced in a local court on Monday and further investigation will be carried out after taking them in police remand.

A case under Sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 120 B ( punishment of criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused at Lopoke police station.
