The police have recovered the bodies of a missing gurdwara granthi and his wife from Western Yamuna Canal near Kaithal road here on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Jasvinder Singh, 45, a resident of Sounkra village of Karnal, and his wife Navneet Kaur, 40. Jasvinder worked as granthi at a gurdwara in Nadana village of the district.

The police said that in the preliminary investigations, it was found that the couple had committed suicide as Jasvinder was unable to return the money he had borrowed from some people in his village.

Sukhvinder Singh, a family member of the deceased, said five people used to harass Jasvinder for not being able to return the money he had allegedly borrowed from them. The police have booked Harjinder Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Bhupinder Singh and two others under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC.

Notably, Jasvinder had left his house with his wife on August 9. When his father called him up after some time, he claimed that he was going to commit suicide.

Taraori police station in-charge Diwan Singh said Kanwaljit Singh, brother of the deceased, had filed a complaint after the couple had gone missing.

He said the bodies of the deceased were sent for postmortem to the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and Hospital, Karnal.
