: Though state BJP, which focused hard, opened its account with a solitary seat, National Conference emerged as the single largest party in the elections to fourth Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) of Kargil. Results for the 26 constituencies were declared late Friday night.

According to the results announced by the district election authority, National Conference emerged as the single largest party by winning 10 seats out of 26 followed by Indian National Congress (INC), which won eight seats, PDP two seats and BJP won one seat.

Five seats went to independents. The polling for LAHDC Kargil was held on August 27.

The district election authority, Vikas Kundal while giving details of the election results appreciated the contestants, returning officers, assistant returning officers, election staff, police and security agencies for their cooperation in conducting the elections cordially.

Five observers appointed for monitoring the poll process in 26 constituencies of LAHDC Kargil district were present during the counting process. However the polls have thrown up a hung house with none getting a clear majority.

Kundal said Saturday despite being a working day, none came forward to stake claim for forming the council. “Hopefully on Monday the representations are expected,” he added. Considering 26 constituencies up for grabs, 14 are required to stake the claim. Four councillors are nominated by the state government.
