Swords and sticks were flashed openly as workers of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and hardliners belonging to panthic organisations clashed here on Wednesday ahead of former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal’s visit.

However, police personnel present at the venue didn’t let the situation going out of hands.

The clash took place when around 100 Sikh hardliner protesters started throwing tomatoes at SAD workers who were there to attend the meeting.

Soon, a large number of SAD workers carrying sharp-edged weapons came to rescue of the partymen, leading to a clash.

SAD spokesperson Parambans Singh Romana said, “We have made the protesters to flee; they were backed by parallel jathedar Baljit Singh Daduwal and Congress party.”

“Faridkot police was sheltering the protesters as they allowed the hardliners to reach the rally spot despite being aware of the situation,” Romana said.

By the time SAD chief Sukhbir Badal arrived, the situation was normal. Sukhbir gave a call to the workers to “tackle opposition aggressively”.

“Show your power and aggression in the upcoming block samiti, zila parishad and, more importantly, in parliamentary polls. I will lead the battle,” said Sukhbir.

Sukhbir termed the Ranjit Singh commission report as bogus. “If you have evidence against us (in Bargari sacrilege), why are you not registering a case?” he said.

“Before the assembly polls, the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party accused SAD leaders of involved in drug business. Now, the Congress is in power for more than 17 months and they have failed to expose our leaders,” Sukhbir said.
